Prayer Warrior Wednesday ~ Joy

This morning, I was saddened by the news of Joy Johnson’s death. I had no idea who she was until this past Monday. She was an 86 year old woman, who at the age of 59 decided to take up running. Each year for the past 25 years she ran in the New York Marathon. The Monday following the marathon, she always visited the Today Show on the plaza.

The Today Show had lovely tribute for her this morning. They shared a little of her story along with her accomplishments. Then they said, “Her morning routine consisted of a cup of coffee, her Bible and an 8 mile run.” I loved it! She was a runner but first and foremost she loved Jesus. She started every single day with Him.

Those who knew her said she lit up a room when she entered. She wasn’t a cranky old lady. She was happy and joyful as her name implied. What a testament! The years hadn’t made her ornery, they increased her joy. Her favorite verse was, “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 NIV) These were the words she hung in her kitchen for inspiration.

I didn’t know Joy personally. In fact, I had never heard of her. But her life was a testimony to God. She spread love wherever she went. And she was a woman who persevered.

Today is Prayer Warrior Wednesday. Have you prayed today? I encourage you to take a few moments to read God’s Word, ponder it and let it penetrate your heart today. The world can be a dark and scary place. But as that 86 year old woman showed, we can be the light. Our world can always use a little more Joy!!
