“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18 NIV)
The events over the last couple of months have left many devastated. We watch the news and listen to the radio and ask “Why God?” Our hearts hurt for the victims and are inspired by those who persevere. But still, there is so much suffering.
Watching the news coverage of the tornados in Oklahoma has spurred so many different emotions in me. I am absolutely heartbroken for the parents who dropped their children off at school Monday morning expecting to pick them up as any other day. They went about their business as usual not expecting to have their lives turned upside down. As the shock wears off and the reality sinks in, they grieve the loss of their children. My heart grieves with them.
Our prayer focus for today is for those parents. It is for the brokenhearted who will be attending funerals and memorial services for their children. It is for the Mom who will never again hold her child and for the Dad who couldn’t protect his family from this tragedy. It is for those parents who will not get over this any time soon but will carry this grief for months and possibly years to come.
I pray for those grieving parents. I ask you to reach down with your mighty hand and lead them through this difficult time. Surround them with arms of love and comfort. Heal their hurting hearts.
