This is a repost from a couple of years ago. It spoke to my heart this morning!
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2 NIV)
I am home school mom. I enjoy it for the most part. I love to spend time with my kids. I’ve taught all of them to read, add and subtract. I’ve taught them to write as well as a little about history. This past year I taught my twins about birds. One of our projects was to build bird feeders. We took plastic bottles, cut holes in them, filled them with seed and hung them outside our schoolroom windows. There is a little pencil sticking out for the birds to perch on as they eat. They aren’t the most beautiful feeders, but they serve the purpose. The birds come right up to our windows and feed from the plastic bottles we have hanging. It’s an opportunity to study them up close. I have to say, it’s pretty cool.
Each day we notice that there is one particular bird that comes to eat our seed. He is a red cardinal and we know he’s there because he perches and chirps while he eats. We have come to recognize his particular chirp. And we usually come to see him. We want to see if anything is changed about him. For a while, he had a female cardinal following him. But lately, he is by himself again. But every day he returns. He knows there will be food waiting for him. And so he comes back.
It brings us great joy to see something we created feeding another creature. We put it out there not knowing what would happen. And here we have this little red cardinal that we look forward to seeing each day. It makes us feel good that we can feed him. We are happy to do it. I think it’s the same with God. He loves to feed us spiritually. He wants us to return each day to be fed. He wants us to grow. He even wants us to invite others to partake of His feast. His word is life and when we share it, we are overjoyed. We get a double portion. We encourage another as well as being nourished ourselves.
I was reminded again today how important it is to spend time with the Lord each and every day. He desires to feed us. If we are filled with His Spirit, there is no room for the “junk food” that the world tries to entice us with. There is no room for fear, confusion, anger, bitterness and frustration. Instead, the Spirit fills us with joy, peace, confidence, love, gentleness and a heart full of generosity. God loves to give to us. Every day He longs to spend time with us. He wants to encourage us along the way. But we have to go back to where we are being fed. We have to return to His word. We have to be fed over and over. Today’s filling expires. We have to renew it each day. We know what it feels like to be fed by God, why do we allow ourselves to be fed by the world? The world can never satisfy the spiritual longing we have. Only through God and His word can we be filled.
